With so many amazing high street brands offering affordable makeup why splurge on the expensive stuff. I’m giving my opinion on whether I think its worth spending extra or saving it for a rainy day.
With my foundation and primer in my opinion this step in terms of quality is just as important as the products you use for your actual skin care regime. It’s going directly onto your skin and so using a higher quality product for me is what I prefer and to be honest worth it. I wear makeup on a daily basis, its just what I do and therefore I think it is worth spending the extra to find a good foundation that works well for your skin. I have generally non reactive skin, but have in the past used cheaper brands and have found it to cause reddening or a slight flare up so this is enough to make me think inexpensive foundations just don’t suit my skin. For me personally, if I am using really nice skin care products, to then use a foundation of lesser quality just doesn’t make sense and the same goes for my primer. I have been using "Estee Lauder double wear light" lately as a daytime foundation and I really love the Estee primer too. Benefit the porefessional is also really really good, and one I have used several times aswell.
Unless using a system like bare minerals and then the mineral veil powder. I do often go for a highstreet powder. I think there are some really good ones that work well over most foundations and have the lasting power too. Lately i’ve been using "rimmel matte finish powder" and for someone whose skin can be particually oily this has worked so well! I also don’t need to reapply unless I am retouching my makeup halfway through the day which is rare during the week. This is an added bonus with a child and not much spare time for faffing with makeup once its been applied once already!
Highstreet again for eyeliner. I don’t think you can go wrong with highstreet eyeliners and lip pencils and they are a really easy way to save back money on makeup. Ive used a couple of higher end pencils and to be honest i’m quite happy to use lower cost because I find they work just as well.
I quite like quite a few higher end mascaras but since shopping on a more tighter budget I’ve tried a few highstreet ones and there pretty bloody good ! I have to say I’ve been impressed with quite a few drug store mascaras and they are definitely worth a try if your trying to cinch in a part of your makeup allowance ! The new “Total Temptation” mascara by maybeline is one I brought recently and really like! No transfer whilst wearing and really full lashes. And I am one for changing my mascara really regularly too so this is so much more affordable when using a cheaper brand.
I am slightly on the fence with this one. Because I use both. I will use a higher end lipstick on a special occasion, and day to day because I reapply it I won’t use anything too expensive. I won’t wear a liner day to day either as Its just less maintenance when i’m busy throughout the day. Higher end lipsticks I love are Chanel and Urban decay and highstreet I really like Rimmel.
Ive been using Benefit “Gimme Brow” for about 4 years now and still love it so much so I can’t see myself changing from it any time soon Its applied using a brush similar textured to a mascara wand and the liquid helps to thicken and even your brows. it is so so quick and super easy to use . I will sometimes use it occasionally alongside the Benefit brow pallet but the “gimme brow is what I go for daily I love it for making brows look fuller . I did however buy the maybelline tattoo brow and so far im quite impressed ! Its essentially a semi permanent tint but I do find it doesn’t last longer than 2 days on me as to oppose the advertised 3 days I would say its quite similar to the Benefit “gimme brow” with the results but just slightly longer lasting. Both products come in 3 different shades and surprisingly I always go for a medium shade for a more natural look. As a 90’s baby Im not going to lie I was guilty of over plucking brows as a teen so they need a little help in hand with filling!! I would say Benefit is pretty affordable and midrange in terms of cost and so definitely something I will carry on using I just love it so much !!
Its safe to say my make-up drawer is a complete mix when it comes to brands, and prices. I think that you can definitely get some really good high-street buys out there but possibly like me when you find a higher end product you adore you just stick to it !
Being a Beauty therapist for 9 years I have been able to use some really beautiful products along the way. One thing most clients say to me is that they dont have the time for a skincare regime, especially mums. But I think when you find products that you love and work well for you, you simplify it and make the time too fit them in. It doesn't have to be complicated you can make skincare and beauty really easy by having a few key products that work well for you. If you are unsure on what to use also or your skin type it is well worth asking. Even if you can't have regular facials or treatments, ask counter staff in department stores, they will be happy to help you. Here are my top 5 day to day products I use on myself. Enjoy!
1.Elemis Japanese camellia oil-
This oil is great for day to day use it is light weight and doesn’t leave your skin feeling slick or sticky, it instantly soaks into the skin and gives it a more refined look. I bathed in this product when I was pregnant morning, noon and night ! It undoubtedly reduced the tummy itchiness as your belly grows, and I really think it aided me in not getting stretch marks, it really is an amazing product. I know there are a lot of celebrity fans of this product too, and some who also swear by it for use during pregnancy. Its such an easy moisturiser that can be used from head to toe and even as a hair mask. One thing I love is products that can be used for multiple things as its quicker and makes a beauty regime easier. You then also don't need hundreds of products for different things. Applying to very slightly damp skin once you've showered is also a great way of making it go further.
2.Elemis Pro collagen cleansing balm-
Another Elemis product, but oh my word this is my all time favourite cleanser! It is amazing! If you wear makeup day to day removing it in the evening is paramount, and having an efficient cleanser to remove it after a long busy day, instead of having to scrub and reapply about 3 times is a lifesaver. The pro collagen range is typically known as an first stages anti ageing range but I find this product suits most skin types fine. The texture is completely different to a regular milk or water cleanser and so when using this waxy product you will only need to apply once for a deep cleanse. It contains orange geranium and lavender which smell amazing, (I love anything with lavender and geranium in so I think that makes me love this product even more!) and once you’ve used the cleanser and removed with a warm cloth or cotton pads the smell remains. This product can also be left on as a face mask for a more intense nourishing cleansing treatment. But personally I tend to just use it as my evening cleanser as I use other masks that suit me better. All in all this product is a good all rounder which you will want to use everyday!
3.Decleor Neroli face serum-
An everyday face oil that lasts for months ! like 6 months. You only need literally a drop of this oil daily so a bottle really lasts. This aromatherapy serum works through the layers of skin to work on hydrating smoothing and reducing the appearance of pours. It is great for normal to dry skin types and gives your skin an added wake me up. A moisturiser does still need to be used on top, but then your good to apply your foundation or makeup base after if you wish. For someone who has combination skin with a typical oily t-zone you would think an oily serum would be the last product to use. But these serums are so lightweight and not greasy. They soak into the skin so well and because you are using the tiniest amount you don't feel it at all.
Ok so I have very slightly cheated with this one and officially this is 2 separate products however, they kinda go together so I wanted to mention both! I have used lip tints and stains for years, this is one of the products I ALWAYS have in my makeup bag, just because it is so easy to use. Its one of those products that will give you an instant pick me up if your not wearing any other makeup. I wear the rose tinted shade as I feel this suits my skin tone best but the range contains 4 colours in total. The tint almost looks like nail polish and you apply it with the same type of brush, it is extremely watery so seeps into your lips to stain them. It drys almost immediately leaving a tint of colour and a very matte finish. You wouldn't even know you had this product on you can't feel it at all. You can also apply this product to your cheek area too for a pop of colour. So the lip balm can then be layered over the top of the tint (or worn on its own) and reapplied throughout the day. I love it sheerly for the great colour and dewiness it leaves after using. I very rarely dont wear anything on my lips, and I find this is an effortless way to add colour to them day to day. The balm contains mango butter and hyaluronate so hydrates and nourishes your lips whilst your wearing it which is great for the colder months. I love that the products are so versatile, and can be used either on there own or together.
5.Estee Lauder Double wear spf 10 foundation-
I found it really difficult to choose my last product as I do use quite a few daily, but I have chosen a foundation because unless I am staying in at home I do wear one every day. I searched high and low for a foundation for years, and tried so many different brands to find one that really suited me perfectly for what I needed. I Knew I definitely needed a high coverage foundation but also something that would wear well and not "melt". Working within a warm spa I found foundations just weren't lasting and would feels sticky, patchy and cake after just a few hours. Ive been using double wear for 2 and half years now though and love it. It covers amazingly without needing countless layers, Stays in place on the skin and doesn't need reapplying. One massive bonus point is that it does not transfer off the skin unless your majorly rubbing your face! Since becoming a mum and now on maternity leave I am still using the same foundation and it works just aswell for my skin in a different environment. I thought maybe I would find I didn't need such a heavy long lasting foundation as I wouldn't be in the spa. But its great I can do my makeup in the morning and its pretty much good for the day. I really do think if you cannot find a foundation that is working well to give the estee lauder ones a go. They come in 33 shades so you will definitely find one to match up. They also do a lighter version which I have used for really hot days, and on holiday. This is also good if you dont feel like you need such a high coverage foundation. The pro collagen cleansing balm that I reviewed first works so well to remove this too. So if you do use the foundation but find you have to double triple cleanse to remove then try that cleanser! There are so many plus points to this and I find it really works so well.
